Στη δεύτερη ατομική του έκθεση στην Elika, ο Jack Burton επανεξετάζει τον τρόπο που βλέπει κανείς τη σύγχρονη φωτογραφία. Ξεκινώντας πάντα από φωτογραφίες που έχει τραβήξει ο ίδιος, δημιουργεί κολάζ πάνω σε αλουμίνιο, ένα υλικό καθαρό και ψυχρό που δεν αφήνει τη σύνθεση να «ηρεμήσει».

 

Έχοντας αφομοιώσει τους κανόνες της φωτογραφίας αλλά και των διαφόρων ρευμάτων της τέχνης (ποπ, εξπρεσιονισμό, αφαίρεση, street art, κλπ) επιχειρεί μία δημιουργική «διαταραχή» που στόχο έχει να κάνει το θεατή να ξεπεράσει τα στερεότυπα με τα οποία έρχεται να δει το έργο, να «διαβάσει» πέρα από αυτά και να εστιάσει στη λεπτομέρεια.

 

Σε πολλές περιπτώσεις τα έργα του μοιάζουν ελεύθερα και πειραματικά, φτιαγμένα με γρήγορες και αποφασιστικές κινήσεις, σαν να προέρχονται από το υποσυνείδητο του καλλιτέχνη και να συντάσσουν ένα τρελό όνειρο. Ένα όνειρο που η συμβατική φωτογραφία δεν μπορεί να απεικονίσει και επικοινωνήσει.

 

Ερεθίσματα και ιδέες που αιωρούνται στο μυαλό του καλλιτέχνη βρίσκουν μία εκρηκτική διέξοδο στο έργο, σαν ένα μακρύ και προσωπικό ταξίδι με ένα γρήγορο τρένο που περνάει μέσα από το αστικό τοπίο, βιομηχανικές ζώνες, λιβάδια με ζώα, διαφημιστικά πόστερ και επιγραφές, οτιδήποτε μπορεί ακούσια να εντυπωθεί μέσα μας σε μία σύγχρονη καταναλωτική κοινωνία που μας βομβαρδίζει καθημερινά με εικόνες.

Σοφία Τούμπουρα

(I died so many times that I became) Immortal

 

Παράλληλα με την έκθεση του Jack Burton, η Σοφία Τούμπουρα παρουσιάζει μια εγκατάσταση στον κήπο της γκαλερί με αφορμή την φθινοπωρινή ισημερία, χρησιμοποιώντας τους συμβολισμούς και τα νοήματα που αποδίδονται σε αυτή, αλλά με μία θετική προσέγγιση: θερισμός, τέλος, θάνατος, έναρξη εσωτερικής φάσης του κύκλου ζωής, εσωτερικότητα, ενδοσκόπηση, σπορά, σύλληψη.

 

Μεγάλες εκτυπώσεις σε ύφασμα, πλέξιγκλας, μικρά και μεγάλα γλυπτά πήλινα αλουμινένια και μπρούτζινα δημιουργούν ένα περιβάλλον πολύχρωμο που καλεί τον επισκέπτη να οικειοποιηθεί τον κήπο και να βρει το σημείο επαφής ή τομής της φύσης και του αστικού βιομηχανικού πολιτισμού.

 

Στα εγκαίνια και κατά τη διάρκεια της έκθεσης η Τούμπουρα θα πραγματοποιήσει ένα live ambient electronica με μουσική της.

 Jack Burton - Sofia Touboura

With his second solo exhibition at Elika gallery, Jack Burton re-examines the way one perceives contemporary photography today. Always starting with his very own photographs, he creates collages on aluminum surfaces, a material that is clean and cold, and doesn't let the compositions settle into something cozy and familiar.

 

Having assimilated the rules of photography, as well as those of various art movements, (pop, expressionism, abstract, street art, etc), he attempts a productive disruption, aiming at making the viewers transcend the stereotypes and preconditions they might have when they confront the work. Thus, they can "read" beyond what lies before their eyes and focus on the details.

 

In many cases, his works seem free and experimental, emerging through quick and decisive gestures, as if they originated from the artist's subconscious, composing an absurd dream. A dream that ordinary photography fails to both portray and convey.

 

Stimuli and ideas floating inside the artist's mind find an explosive way out through his work; like a long, personal journey on board a fast train, crossing urban landscapes, industrial zones, farmlands, advertising posters and billboards, anything that could unintentionally leave its mark upon us while living in a society of consumerism that relentlessly bombards us with images.

 

Jack Burton was born in Barry, South Wales in 1988. He graduated from the Royal Academy in 2017 and holds a BA in Fine Arts from Chelsea College of Art and Design, London, where he graduated in 2010, and an M.res in Cultural Studies and Humanities from the London Consortium (2010-2011). He lives and works in London, U.K.

 

Sofia Touboura

(I died so many times that I became) Immortal

 

Along with Jack Burton's exhibition, Sophia Toumpoura presents an installation in the gallery's garden, at the occasion of the winter solstice, using symbolisms and notions that are attributed to it, only with a more positive approach: harvest, completion, death, beginning of the esoteric phase of life, esotericism, introspection, sowing, conception.

 

Large scale prints on fabric, plexiglass, both small and big sculptures, ceramic, aluminum and bronze, create a multi-coloured environment that entices the visitors to wander around freely, feel at ease and find their very own contact, or intersection point, between nature and urban industrial civilization.

 

At the opening night and throughout the exhibition, Touboura will perform her own compositions during a live ambient electronica solo.
